Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Leisure involvement refers to an individual’s level of investment or concentration in leisure-related activities. This refers to people's interest, enjoyment, and level of involvement in recreational activities, in other words. Needless to say, leisure involvement significantly varies both from person to person and across different activities. For example, it could involve deep engagement in adventurous exploration activities; participation in nature or cultural trips; immersion in accommodation or culinary experiences; or focusing on sports, board games, or competitive gaming as recreational activities.

The synergy between modern technology and smart leisure has resulted in a transformative enhancement of leisure and entertainment experiences overall. From the consumer's perspective, smart-leisure travel brings about diverse entertainment experiences and benefits. These include, for instance, engaging in leisure activities through e-commerce platforms or different communication software, experiencing unique and captivating leisure through AR (augmented reality) and VR (virtual reality) technologies, enhancing efficiency in leisure experiences with smart travel tools, designing itineraries using AI tools such as ChatGPT, and mitigating travel and leisure risks through intelligent setups. From a manager’s perspective, smart-leisure travel helps save labor costs and provides scientific and innovative marketing strategies. As an example, it generates new prospects for marketing travel destinations; innovates the general travel experience for tourists; mitigates risks in leisure travel; and assists in deepening consumer experiences, understanding consumer preferences, expanding consumer leisure domains, and enhancing the sustainability of travel destinations.

Overall, the combination of leisure participation and smart travel can create a more personalized, enjoyable, efficient, safe, sustainable, and forward-looking leisure experience. This integration aims to satisfy and fulfill various consumer benefits such as individual preferences, flow experiences, diverse leisure activities, experience satisfaction, service convenience, efficient travel quality, sustainable tourism, destination attachment, and loyalty.
