Environmental Technology in Sustainable Biological Wastewater and Biowaste Management
This special issue belongs to the section “Sustainable Water Management“.
Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Currently, wastewater and biowaste treatment offers significant prospects in terms of the recovery of material and energy, such as nutrients, heat, electricity, biomethane, and bioplastics (PHA), thus alleviating the pressure on natural and limited resources.
However, sustainable solutions for wastewater and biowaste management are needed so that the environmental, economic, and social costs required for their treatment do not exceed the benefits resulting from their valorization.
In light of this, biological processes appear to be particularly promising for the development of alternative strategies that favor the treatment and valorization of matrices, combined with their other benefits of reduced consumption and costs. The aim of this Special Issue is to collect the most recent, in-depth, and cutting-edge research on innovative technologies and solutions for the sustainable management of wastewater and biowaste, in compliance with the principles of the circular economy.
In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but are not limited to) the following:
- Innovative biological strategies for wastewater and biowaste management;
- Resource recovery through innovative biological technologies;
- Advanced modeling;
- Enhanced process-monitoring techniques;
- Advanced air/odor treatment and control;
- Sludge pre-treatment for increased biodegradability;
- Integrated process design, scale-up, and full-scale case studies;
- Environmental impact assessment;
- Cost–benefit analysis;
- Challenges in wastewater/biowaste treatment in the water, energy, food security nexus.
We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
