Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
We are pleased to announce a Special Edition of Sustainability on “Extractive Industries towards Sustainable Development.” During the creation of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2015, the extractive industries were specifically called on to contribute to reaching these goals. Since then, the mining and oil and gas industries have deepened their engagement with the concept of sustainability, as evidenced by company reports that highlight the sustainability of their operations and their contributions to sustainable development. Though not without critique, these industries are making concerted efforts to measure and report on their outcomes in accordance with global and industry sustainable development targets. Therefore, the aim of this Special Edition is to provide a critical perspective on the extractive industries’ contributions to sustainable development. To this end, we are soliciting manuscripts that focus on original research and provide novel perspectives that address but are not limited to the following questions: In what ways are the extractive industries contributing to the SDGs? Where do the challenges lie and opportunities exist for more substantial contributions to the SDGs? What lessons can be learned from previous attempts to contribute to the SDGs, and how might these inform future actions? Can reporting on sustainable development contributions be improved through standardization and better quantification methods?
