Sustainable Offshore and Ocean Engineering Applications: Computational Hydrodynamics and Aerodynamics

Dear Colleagues,

To achieve sustainable development in offshore and ocean engineering, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) will have an important role to play. For example, to evaluate the survivability of floating offshore wind turbines (FOWTs) under extreme marine conditions, i.e., storms, high-fidelity CFD models are needed in order to accurately predict highly non-linear wave–support structure and wind–turbine rotor interactions as well as the complex interplay between the hydrodynamic and aerodynamic loads.

Over the last few decades, many commercial, in-house and open-source CFD codes have been developed specifically for offshore and ocean engineering applications. However, to apply these models in real engineering design, a number of challenges remain. For example, the computational costs of these models, even when run on high-performance computers, are still far too high, so an approach based on coupling flow solvers of different fidelity will be essential. For problems involving multiple physics and temporal/spatial scales, new techniques need to be developed for effective and efficient model integration, including parallel implementation. 

The aim of this Special Issue is to disseminate the latest advancements in CFD techniques for sustainable offshore and ocean engineering applications. A key focus will be on the development of efficient multi-physics and multi-scale models which can be used to aid the design and deployment of next-generation offshore engineering structures. The scope of this Special Issue will include, but not be limited to, the following topics:

• Review of the state-of-the-art CFD techniques for offshore and ocean engineering applications;
• New techniques for effective and efficient coupling of multi-physics/multi-scale models;
• CFD modelling of extreme loading on offshore renewable converters (wave and tidal);
• Coupled wind and wave loads on offshore structures, e.g., FOWTs;
• Integrated numerical wave tank for modelling wave structure interaction including hydro-elasticity effects and mooring line dynamics;
• Sloshing flow: applications and mitigation;
• Code integration through coupling libraries such as PreCICE and MUI
• Parallel implementation of traditional and emerging HPC architectures
