Dear Colleagues,

Customer satisfaction is the key determinant of survival and success for any business. There are a wide variety of antecedents and consequences of customer satisfaction/dissatisfaction for tourism and hospitality businesses. Tourism and hospitality businesses are going through more volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous environmental conditions than ever before. Hence, ensuring customer satisfaction and sustainability has become a more challenging task for tourism and hospitality businesses. This call for papers aims to bring together relevant, original, and interdisciplinary contributions to the topic from dyadic and interdisciplinary perspectives. Theoretical and empirical original research papers, review papers, and conceptual papers from both marketing (marketing, consumer behavior, and service marketing) and management (management, organizational behavior, and human resource management) perspectives are welcome. Accordingly, the Guest Editor welcomes submissions on (but not limited to) the following critical topics for this Special Issue:

This study examined the direct and indirect relationships between perceptions of destination social responsibility and environmentally responsible behavior. This paper uses the Stimulus–Organism–Response theory to evaluate the mediating roles of identification, reputation, and satisfaction of the destination for visitors. With a sample size of 371 Vietnamese tourists, PLS-SEM was used to assess the model and test the hypothesis. The findings indicate that the perception of destination social responsibility positively impacts Vietnamese tourists’ commitment to environmentally responsible behavior. The results also support the concept that the degree of tourists’ environmentally responsible behavior is indirectly influenced by the perceived social responsibility of the destination through its identification, reputation, and satisfaction. This study offers theoretical and practical insights into how to enhance the efficiency of destination social responsibility programs and improve Vietnamese tourist’s impressions of Phu Quoc. This research conducts an exhaustive thematic analysis to explore the prospects as well as to create a conceptual framework for transformative experiences in cycling tourism. Using rigorous familiarisation, block and file techniques, recurring themes and patterns are identified, revealing insights into shared characteristics and potential synergies between transformative tourism (TT) and cycling tourism (CT), contributing to a deeper understanding of the transformative power of cycling experiences within the broader context of tourism that should further aid in the integration of such transformative experiences in CT. The results show that both TT and CT represent distinctive yet interconnected typologies within the realm of tourism. Several similarities are presented from an almost-mirrored tourist profile, inclination towards sustainable and regenerative tourism, assimilation of slow-tourism, immersive and eudaimonic experiences, well-being, reflection, and personal development opportunities. Based on these insights, this research introduces an innovative integration of both concepts, offering a distinct and enriching tourism experience by enhancing the transformative power of cycling experiences. The article provides practical implications for industry practitioners involved in tourism design and management and opens avenues for future investigations vital to the commencement of this typology, such as the development of theoretical frameworks, innovative perspectives, and evidence-based recommendations for tourism stakeholders. This study explores the effects of four types of visitor experiences on experience value and satisfaction. Farmer’s markets indirectly have an educational function through disseminating food and agricultural knowledge. They significantly shorten farm product distribution channels, providing more economic benefits for participating producers. After the pre-test, a questionnaire was officially distributed using convenience sampling and analyzed in SPSS. The study primarily found that the entertainment factor has the most significant impact on the experience value and satisfaction of the visitor experience. Moreover, through quantitative analysis, this research offers practical recommendations to enhance consumer experience value and satisfaction for farmer’s market stallholders and managers. The senior tourist market is growing, because the number of elderly people is increasing in Korea. It is widely accepted that experience in travel is more important than any other factor. Thus, the aim of this study was to examine the importance of the experience economy and its impact on outcome variables with the moderating role of tour guiding services in the senior tourism industry. This study more specifically proposed that there is a positive relationship between the four dimensions of the experience economy, which include education, entertainment, aesthetics, and escapism, and tour quality. In addition, it was proposed that tour quality has a positive influence on tour satisfaction and word-of-mouth. Lastly, this study investigated the moderating role of a tour guide service in the relationship between the experience economy and tour quality. The data were collected from 323 seniors who had experienced an overseas package tour in Korea. In order to test the proposed model, this study employed confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling analysis. The data analysis results indicated that entertainment and aesthetics play a significant role in the formation of tour quality. The results of the data analysis also showed that tour quality has a positive influence on tour satisfaction, which in turn positively affects word-of-mouth. Furthermore, a tour guide service moderated the relationship between aesthetics and tour quality. Full article

Blocking regional communication is the beginning of the deterioration and even destruction of civilization. Accessibility is the principal condition for the development of mountain areas and the first barrier to the breakthrough of tourism. In this context, the lack of unified transportation planning and analysis of tourists’ perceptions leads to poor accessibility and consequently the sustainable development of tourist destinations. This paper considers Yading Airport, the highest civil airport in the world, located in the mountainous area of southwest China, as an example. Based on the computed results of traffic accessibility, this research elucidates tourists’ perception with Nexus Thinking of sustainability. Furthermore, in light of deconstructing the connotation of accessibility by questionnaire, subdivision dimensions together with certain factors are paraphrased. The paper ultimately puts forward the following concepts: (1) The perception of accessibility represents invariant material form in the subjectivity space and attributes of the flow space; (2) Taking perception as the variable, evaluation of accessibility is considered affected by residents’ attitudes; (3) Tourism accessibility represents the duality between tourist flow and airport security management. These conclusions demonstrate that, in certain regions, tourism has an effect on integrating elements and constructing identity. Relevant suggestions are presented in this paper for sustainable development that relate to tourism in mountainous areas. Full article

Personality characteristics influence individuals’ perceptions, evaluations, and behaviors toward external stimuli. This study aims to investigate the influence of the extroversion–introversion personality characteristics of hospitality customers on the amount of value they attached to the different service quality dimensions. The influence of customers’ personality characteristics on the amount of value attached to the different service quality dimensions has not been previously studied by researchers. The data were obtained from 508 Turkish tourists staying at five-star hotels in holiday resorts located on the Aegean coast of Turkey. Partial least-squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) was used to analyze the data. At the measurement model stage, the scales were subjected to reliability and validity tests. It was seen that all the variables in the measurement model met the reliability and validity criteria. The structural model and the hypotheses were tested to examine the relationships between the latent variables. The results show that while introvert customers tend to attach more value to the tangibles dimension of service quality, extrovert customers tend to attach more value to the empathy dimension of service quality. Tourists’ environmental perception is the decisive factor of cultural tourism experience. Although this topic research is relatively common, there are essential differences between different theme tourism areas. This study selects the national Huizhou Cultural and Ecological Reserve in China as the research object, which has a diverse cultural field, a wide range of researchable levels, and research theoretical support, and focuses on the evaluation of tourists’ environmental perceptions of cultural-themed tourism reserves. The research is in line with the basic consensus of the international community on the relationship between NRM conservation and sustainable development and has a positive significance for cultural conservation. In this study, nine indicators were constructed from the three dimensions of cultural perception, environmental perception, and emotional perception, including mental pleasure, experience comfort, audiovisual richness, cultural awareness, cultural diversity, cultural influence, facilities completeness, environment tidiness, and travel convenience. Questionnaires (283) were distributed, 260 of which were valid. The analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and entropy method were used to study the cultural context perception of Huizhou Cultural Ecological Reserve. The Cronbach coefficient was 0.977, the KMO value was 0.953, and the validity was 91.87%. The research results show that, first, tourists’ perception level from high to low is cultural perception (0.351), environmental perception (0.349), and emotional perception (0.301). Secondly, the factors most strongly perceived by tourists are tourism convenience (0.129), cultural influence (0.126), cultural diversity (0.118), and facilities completeness (0.115). Thirdly, improving tourists’ spiritual pleasure, experience comfort, audiovisual richness, cultural recognition, and environmental cleanliness is conducive to promoting tourists’ perception and experience. The Yangshuo Section of the Lijiang River Basin (YS of LRB) is the essence of the Guilin landscape in China. The typical karst landforms and changing topography form a unique forest landscape in YS of LRB. In order to reveal the visual quality of itse forest landscape, this research used GIS spatial analysis technology combined with Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), the assessment factors were leveled and assigned, and some abstract assessment indicators in the visual quality assessment were quantified. Three primary indicators of forest landscape visual quality (FLVQ) assessment in YS of LRB, including Scenic Quality (SQ), Visual Sensitivity (VS), and Visual Absorption Capability (VAC), are proposed. Visual assessment units are divided based on the watershed, and a process and framework for the comprehensive assessment of FLVQ was established at the watershed scale. The results show that the FLVQ in YS of LRB is generally at a low level. The area percentage of FLVQ at high (13′&11′), medium (9′) and low (7′&5′) levels are 10.95%, 29.67% and 59.38%, respectively. The comprehensive score of FLVQ in the karst area is slightly lower than that in the non-karst area, but the karst area of the units with the highest FLVQ accounts for 99.58% of the FLVQ of karst areas along the Lijiang River distributed in the Lijiang River Scenic Area, greater than that of any other areas. The FLVQ in regions with high vegetation coverage and large topographic changes is relatively higher. Slope, relief amplitude, and vegetation richness directly affect the visual quality of forest landscape. Under the influence of local scenic area protection policies and relatively stable natural climate, the FLVQ in YS of LRB has maintained a stable level in the past 20 years. The areas with low FLVQ are mainly cultivated land and construction land, which have low vegetation coverage and no obvious change in terrain. Based on the comprehensive assessment results of FLVQ in YS of LRB, the management goals and future development suitability of forest landscape is discussed. This research proposes appropriate construction and management strategies for forest landscape structures. The results are helpful for providing a scientific research basis for forest landscape resource conservation, landscape site selection, and forest ecotourism development in the Karst landscape area. The impact of human disturbance on the forest landscape fragmentation and the growth characteristics of forests under different landforms are the focus of future FLVQ research on similar areas. Traditional tourism development has adopted a top-down approach, and the role of government has primarily been decision making and regulation in regard to tourism development. There has been growing interest in residents’ participation in tourism destination development and management. The study aims provide empirical evidence by examining the relationship between participative leadership, empowerment, and tourism participation among residents living in the provinces near the borders in Korea. We examine the economic benefits derived from tourists as a moderator. A total of 758 questionnaires were used. This study performed descriptive analysis, factor analysis, and structural equation modeling (SEM). This study examined the effects of participative leadership and empowerment on three categories of residents’ participation in tourism in DMZ areas in South Korea. This present study tests the relationships between and evaluated the effects of participatory leadership and resident empowerment on three types of resident participation. Participative leadership positively influences empowerment and resident participation. In addition, a positive effect of psychological empowerment between participative leadership and participation as a mediator was found. Participative leadership affects motivational processes, and psychological empowerment leads to participation. The results found that residents perceive their participation as important, and there is no difference based on the additional income they derive from tourism. The study contributes to the enhancement of sustainable development and a deeper understanding of how residents act. Furthermore, the results can provide direction for the creation of participative approaches in tourism development. Full article

Theme hotels are becoming popular because of their fascinating characteristics, within which, theme hotels that feature green practices have become a niche market in the highly competitive hotel industry. Despite past research demonstrating that the cognitive image created by a green hotel exerts strong effects on customers’ favorable reactions, how guest appreciation for green practices affects the relationship between the hotel atmosphere and guest satisfaction remains unknown for hotels of this kind. This research investigated the influence of atmospheric cues on customers’ perceived value and satisfaction and the possible effects of green practices in shaping customer satisfaction. In total, 267 valid responses from persons with experience with theme hotels were used to test the model using confirmatory factor analysis and path analysis of the structural equation model. Results of the research indicate that customers’ atmosphere perception of the theme hotel positively affects customer satisfaction, while the perceived value of the hotel mediated the effects of atmosphere on customer satisfaction. The guest’s appreciation of the hotel’s green practices moderated the relationship between atmospherics and customer satisfaction. Academic and managerial implications of the results, as well as limitations and directions for future research, are provided. Full article

The COVID-19 pandemic, which has become an important new research topic, has exerted a huge impact on airports and the antecedents of passengers’ travel decisions following its outbreak. In the current study, we aimed to investigate the influences of four attributes of airport physical environment (facility functionality, facility aesthetics, layout accessibility, and cleanliness) on passengers’ perceived safety, satisfaction, and travel intention, as well as the mediating role of passenger satisfaction. We built a structural equation model to assume the relationship between these variables. A total of 398 domestic travelers were asked to fill out a survey in order to reveal their perceptions of airport physical environment, perceived safety, satisfaction, and travel intention. The results indicate that passengers with positive perceptions of the facility functionality, layout accessibility, and cleanliness of airports had a higher degree of satisfaction and might be more willing to engage in more air travel in the future. In particular, a clean airport environment significantly improved passengers’ perceived safety. Moreover, facility functionality, layout accessibility, cleanliness, and perceived safety all had an effect on travel intention through the mediating role of satisfaction. Overall, these findings offer suggestions for airport authorities aiming to revive demand for air travel. Discussions about airport physical environment improvements along with limitations and suggestions for future research are provided. Full article

In recent decades, agritourism has been suggested as one of the strategies for sustainable development of rural areas and diversification of the rural economy. The main purpose of this research was to review the situation, opportunities and challenges of agritourism in Iran and Poland to create an understanding of the agritourism situation in both countries. The systematic literature review (SLR) was used as the instrument in this study to access the number of possible papers and to understand the literature regarding the history, current states, support policies, developments and challenges of agritourism in Iran and Poland. Published research studies on entrepreneurship and agritourism in Iran and Poland between 2000 and 2022 were assessed. The results of this study showed that the development of agritourism in Poland has a longer history and is more developed compared to Iran and the Iranian authorities should take more measures in managing and developing agritourism. This study provides a major contribution to knowledge by being among the very first studies that examines and compares the situation of agritourism development in Iran and Poland. Practically, this research provides useful understanding of agritourism services and the areas need to be developed in the two countries for the development of agritourism. The article presents the index of positioning a competitive farm and gaining an advantage on the market of agritourism services. Full article

Most studies on wetland parks focus on resource surveys and evaluations, park planning and design, and the construction of hardware facilities. Only a few studies have covered tourism experiences. With the rapid development of online media, online text data have become a prominent research direction for tourism experiences. Based on the web text analysis method and importance-performance analysis, Rost Content Mining 6 software was used. This served to analyze word frequency, semantic web analysis, and sentiment analysis, and to explain the web text about Haizhu National Wetland Park. It also helped to find problems experienced by tourists and their underlying reasons and proposed improvement strategies. The results showed that the overall quality of the tourism experience in Haizhu National Wetland Park was relatively high. However, some of the negative comments mainly focused on the lack of humanistic landscape construction, lagging infrastructure, and poor management services. By combining research results, improvement strategies were proposed that addressed infrastructure, management services, scenic spot publicity, ecological environmental protection, and so on. These could help to enhance tourism experiences. Full article

The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted both healthcare and the economy on a global scale. This pandemic has changed consumer habits and behaviors significantly, primarily because of confinement-related issues. While numerous research has been undertaken to study customer satisfaction using surveys and online passenger ratings, the effect of COVID-19 on passenger satisfaction has not been explored. It is vital to assess satisfaction indicators gathered from online consumer reviews to ascertain consumers’ preferences for airline services during the COVID-19 pandemic. The goal of this study is to determine the primary themes that emerged from airline travelers’ internet reviews during the COVID-19 outbreak. Additionally, it attempts to determine which of these themes relate to higher and lower passenger satisfaction. The article uses qualitative (i.e., narratives) analyses to examine the main components of passengers’ subjective experiences of the airline. Data are represented by passenger reviews posted on the TripAdvisor website. The analyses revealed ten themes in descriptions of airline travel experiences. These include “flight”, “service”, “staff”, “food”, “check-in”, “cancellation”, “COVID-19”, “airport”, “class”, and “luggage”. Dissatisfying concepts are linked with the “cancellation”, “check-in”, “refund”, and “airport” concepts. Full article

Sustainable tourism must maintain a high level of customer satisfaction, raise awareness of sustainability concerns, and spread sustainable tourism practices among them. Several earlier studies have measured sustainable tourism in various regions of the world, but a thorough review of it is rare. Thus, the study is founded on a comprehensive literature review to evaluate the current research level and to provide guidelines for future research on sustainable tourism. The paper’s first section clarifies and analyzes a broad overview of existing studies. While a tabulated presentation of studies, which consists of the author, significant objectives, methods, and critical results, is broadly given in the second part. The third part of the study highlights the critical analysis of the existing literature on sustainable tourism and research gaps. This study makes a significant positive contribution to sustainable tourism research. It is beneficial for aspiring researchers conducting subsequent research studies since it offers a research pathway to advance the field’s literature. The broad domains of sustainability, issues related to sustainable infrastructure and services, livelihood, and management of tourism destinations are the critical areas that scientific research studies could further explore. The results of this study show that most studies lack depth in proper analysis, methodology, geographical variances, empirical analysis, and real-world application. Full article
