Dear Colleagues,

In recent years, significant attention has been directed to the critical need for sustainable development (see Pacheco et al., 2010). Sustainable development, for example, has been associated with responsible practices undertaken by organizations in relation to social, economic and environmental issues (Murphy et al., 2013). To this end, it can be argued that entrepreneurship and innovation can contribute significantly to sustainability by retaining the ecosystem, providing innovative solutions to climate change and reducing its environmental impact (Gast et al., 2017; Haldar, 2019; Schaltegger, 2013; Schaltegger and Wagner, 2011; Shepherd and Patzelt, 2011). Sustainable development, however, is promoted and sustained by those who put sustainability at the heart of their entrepreneurial and innovation activities.

The relationship between sustainable development and entrepreneurship has been viewed by different streams of academic research and literature. For example, the association between them has been referred to as ecopreneurship, social entrepreneurship, sustainable entrepreneurship and institutional entrepreneurship (see Anderson and Leal, 1997; Bright et al., 2006, Bull, 2008; Cohen, 2006; Schaltegger and Wagner, 2011). The sustainable entrepreneurship literature has shed significant light on the characteristics of individuals that underpin their ability to undertake and create sustainable entrepreneurship (e.g., Kimuli et al., 2020; Jahanshahi et al., 2017; Ploum et al., 2018; Vuorio et al., 2018). Specifically, this stream of literature suggests that entrepreneurs’ characteristics, such as their knowledge on the sustainability of ‘the natural and communal environment’ (Patzelt and Shepherd, 2011, p. 631), is considered to be a critical factor that enables entrepreneurs to exploit sustainable opportunities. Moreover, it has been suggested that networks and strategic partnership, collaboration with universities and local communities, government policies and institutional support are factors that are associated with sustainable entrepreneurship (see Anand et al., 2021; Bischoff, 2018; Cohen, 2006; Gasbarro et al., 2018; Juma, and James, 2017; Spence et al., 2011).

However, although the previous literature has advanced our knowledge and understanding of the important roles of sustainable entrepreneurship and sustainable innovation, a number of studies suggest the need for further work in this area (see for example, Anand et al., 2021; Haldar, 2019). Therefore, this call for papers aims to provide more knowledge and understanding about sustainable entrepreneurship and sustainable innovation both in developed and developing economies. Specifically, we call for papers that provide help in understanding the foundations, processes and outcomes of adopting sustainable entrepreneurship, innovation approaches and management practices in both small and large-sized organisations, along with how this affects the well-being and economic prosperity of a society in the short-run and in the long-run. While we encourage papers that are focused on the following themes, other relevant topics are also welcome:

  • Drivers and barriers in the pursuit of sustainable entrepreneurship and innovation.
  • Differences in management approaches for sustainable entrepreneurship and innovation between small and large firms.
  • Promoting and supporting sustainable innovation and entrepreneurship in developing economies.
  • Moving existing firms towards sustainable entrepreneurship and innovation.

  • Leadership and sustainable development and growth.

Global environmental concerns have prompted organizations to adopt green human resource management practices that will eventually lead to green innovations. Given that understanding, this study aims to converge multidimensional research published on green human resource management (GHRM) and green innovation. In addition, it seeks to discuss the topic’s research trends in the context of what, how, when, where, and by whom. The data were retrieved from the Scopus database (until March 2023), and VOSviewer was used to investigate the research trends. A total of 312 documents were extracted from the Scopus database, and 46 published articles were finalized using the PRISMA flow approach. The results indicate that there has been an upward trend in terms of published articles on the topic, and the highest number of articles (15) were published in the current year, 2023. The co-occurrence results indicate that GHRM is strongly associated with environmental performance and green innovation. The journals Environmental Science and Pollution Research and Sustainability (Switzerland) stand out in this domain. The Abu Dhabi University of United Arab Emirates is the most cited institution, whereas Saudi Arabia has the highest co-authorship at the country level. Furthermore, this study summarizes the major developments in this research domain and suggests research gaps and possible future directions. Full article

Associative enterprises linked to the social economy continue to be an important economic alternative for small producers, generating decent work opportunities for people excluded from the formal labour market and contributing to sustainable development. The social and economic importance of this type of initiative has prompted several scientific publications on its success factors, leaving a gap in its practicality, raising the question: How can success factors of associative productive ventures be integrated into management indicators that promote their organisational sustainability? The aim is to define and prioritise management indicators that promote associative productive ventures through the analysis of key success factors. This study was carried out using a combination of BSC management methodology and AHP multicriteria decision making, based on a bibliographic review of success factors and the criteria of experts including managers of consolidated production associations in Quito-Ecuador. The results show that the indicators of participatory leadership, technical training and labour integration are the most relevant in the consolidation of associative productive ventures, prompting the conclusion that the prioritisation and integration of business and social management indicators would boost the organisational sustainability of associative ventures. Sustainable development objectives place a high priority on entrepreneurship and renewable energy. Supporting entrepreneurial activities in the renewable energy industry can provide economic growth and employment to accomplish the Sustainable Development Goals Agenda 2030. Solar water heating systems can provide clear benefits for both the environment and economic growth. There is a gap in the literature regarding the study of the factors hindering or driving the development of the solar water heating system industry. This study aims to investigate the solar water heating system industry’s challenges and attempts to define the drivers to further develop the industry. Thus, solar water heating entrepreneurship parameters can be identified. Additionally, energy savings and carbon dioxide emissions were calculated for the region to raise awareness among consumers. This study used the qualitative analysis method through semi-structured interviews with 40 business owners in Adana/Turkey. The findings showed that the industry has administrative, production, political, and economic issues; there is a need for economic support and expanding education and control mechanisms. Also, the payback period is 1.63~3.27 years for a solar water heating system and this system prevents 800.75 kg of CO2 emission. The study has implications for policy-making, practice, scientific research, and the SDGs Agenda 2030. Full article

Digital Transformations (DT) play an increasingly important role in academia and business, yet their significant Environmental Footprint (EF) is often overlooked, sidelining their potential for Environmental Sustainability (ES). This paper bridges this gap by integrating ES into the discourse of DT, proposing Green Enterprise Architecture (GREAN) as a method for sustainable transformation. Utilizing a Design Science Research approach, we developed an artefact outlining a comprehensive strategy for embedding ES in DT across various layers of an organization. The tool’s need was validated via a systematic literature review (SLR), highlighting the significant research gap in Green Enterprise Architecture. The artefact provides concrete Courses of Action (CoAs) for incorporating ES into the organizational strategy, business, data, application, and technology layers and proposes relevant capabilities to address this. The paper further presents an ES-aware business capability modelling, an innovative business modelling approach that integrates environmental sustainability principles by using (in a novel way) the presentation and analysis methods that capability mapping offers. The proposed artefact serves as a starting point for environmentally sustainable DTs. Future research directions include in-depth exploration of each enterprise layer for ES, real-world validation of our proposed tools and concepts, and the expansion of these into a full framework. This study examined factors that might motivate employees to engage in social innovation. The objectives of this study were to identify the relative importance of factors that impact Employee Social Intrapreneurial Behavior (ESIB) in the manufacturing sector in Albania using an AHP approach and to select the best practice that can improve Employee Social Intrapreneurial Behavior (ESIB) on a company basis in the same sector by merging a linguistic method with the AHP approach. A questionnaire was designed to collect expert viewpoints. A standardized AHP scale ranging from 1 to 9 was used in the questionnaire. Fifteen managers and experts from four important manufacturing companies in Albania (Everest Shpk., Kamëz, Albania; Lufra Shpk., Lushnje, Albania; Ajka Shpk., Lushnje, Albania and F&M Shpk., Tirane, Albania) were contacted, and eleven of them expressed an interest in engaging in our study by ranking the importance of various criteria and sub-criteria. The findings suggest that the sub-components of the internal factor, such as superior relationship quality and expected image gains, have a combined importance of 50% in the local weights in the Albanian context. The two sub-components mentioned above remain significant in the analysis of global weights, accounting for 41% of global influence. These findings confirm Hofstede’s evaluation of the Albanian culture, where the power distance dimension ranks first, accounting for 90% of the variance and thus classifying the society as very hierarchical. In such a cultural context, people accept and try to please their leaders. Furthermore, high uncertainty avoidance determines individual motivation for financial gains in an unsecure economic environment. We proposed and examined two programs that businesses could implement to boost employee participation in innovative behaviors, and the results suggest that organizations should implement a program called the Workshop. The core idea of this program is to provide monthly workshops focusing on improving humorous situations that may have positive effects on ESIB. Due to the small number of participants in this study, a future study might want to examine the viewpoints of employees as well as other stakeholders, such as NGOs or legal institutions. Full article

Innovation is the engine of economic growth, and green innovation can make this growth sustainable. In the context of tightening resource and environmental constraints and the strategic process of innovation-driven growth, green innovation strategy has become the core element and effective driving force for manufacturing enterprises to achieve green transformation and gain sustainable competitive advantage. Firstly, this paper constructs a research framework of “corporate green innovation strategy (CGIS)—green organization identity (GOI)—employees’ green innovation behavior (EGIB)—corporate green innovation performance (CGIP)” based on the natural resource-based view. Second, this paper investigates the impact of CGIS on EGIB and the chain mediating role of GOI and EGIB in this process. The study shows that GIS has a significant positive impact on CGIP. GOI mediates between CGIS and CGIP. EGIB mediates between CGIS and CGIP. GOI and EGIB have a chain mediating role between CGIS and CGIP. This paper analyzes the process mechanism of CGIS on CGIP and provides an intentional reference for manufacturing companies to implement green innovation strategy and improve green innovation performance. This study lends new insights into the hitherto-unexplored relationship between entrepreneurial thinking and the sustainability of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Iran, mediated by social media. The goal was to investigate the effect of entrepreneurial thinking, mediated by social media, on the sustainability of SMEs in Iran from January to February 2022. The statistical population comprised 407 SME managers based in the Pardis Technology Park and the Science and Technology Town (Iran). Using Cochran’s formula, a sample of 197 SME managers was selected via the simple random method. The data were collected using a 5-point Likert scale questionnaire with 25 questions, the reliability and validity of which had been examined and confirmed. The data were analyzed in SmartPLS 3. The results revealed that entrepreneurial thinking plays a pivotal role in managerial decisions and is a crucial factor in the sustainability of SMEs in Iran. Managers, as creators and reformers of the internal business environment, can establish and enhance a strong link between business sustainability and employees’ ability to acquire entrepreneurial thinking. Although the performance implications of inter- and intra-firm collaborations have been discussed by prior studies, how such collaborations can drive the accelerated internationalization of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) originating from emerging markets remains unclear. This study was, thus, aimed at shedding light on this relationship by drawing insights from the resource-based view (RBV). We argued that the interaction between inter- and intra-firm collaborations can drive accelerated internationalization through environmental management practices. We, thus, developed and tested a conceptual framework by performing structural equation modeling on a sample of 208 SMEs based in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Our findings reveal that the interaction between inter- and intra-firm collaborations is indeed conducive to accelerated internationalization. More importantly, we found that environmental management practices mediate the relationship between such interaction and accelerated internationalization. Our findings have important implications for international entrepreneurship research and practice in relation to how environmental management practices can enhance such a relationship. Full article

In recent years, despite the rapid growth in the number of entrepreneurial incubation platforms in China, many of them are experiencing the sustainability dilemma caused by the loss of incubated startups. However, there is a dearth of research that explores how to promote incubated startups’ continuance intention towards entrepreneurial incubation platforms. Addressing this gap, the present study develops a dedication–constraint model based on the dual model framework, investigating the distinct impacts of entrepreneurial support and relationship-specific investment on incubated startups’ continuance intention towards entrepreneurial incubation platforms. A sample of 534 incubated startups in China was employed to test the research model, and the structural equation modelling was adopted for data analysis. Empirical results indicate that the dedication-based mechanism and constraint-based mechanism simultaneously, yet differently, affect incubated startups’ continuance intention towards entrepreneurial incubation platforms. Specifically, in the dedication-based mechanism, social support and technical support are revealed as the antecedents to relationship satisfaction that significantly leads to benefit-based dependence. As for the constraint-based mechanism, setup activity is the only salient indicator to termination costs, which consequently has a positive effect on cost-based dependence. Incubated startups’ continuance intention towards entrepreneurial incubation platforms is influenced by both benefit-based dependence and cost-based dependence, ultimately. Full article

Entrepreneurial financing has a profound impact on young college students’ involvement in entrepreneurial practice and entrepreneurial performance. A certain amount of research literature about the relationship between financing efficiency and entrepreneurial vitality of college students has been accumulated, but the relevant analysis and research conclusions are not unified, which requires us to summarize general conclusions through the meta-analysis method. Based on 444,106 samples from 21 studies on the relationship between financing and entrepreneurship in college students from 2015 to 2022, this study conducts a meta-analysis on the relationship between their financial efficiency and entrepreneurial vitality. The moderating effects of five variables, entrepreneurial competence, entrepreneurial education level, age, entrepreneurial location environment and entrepreneur social capital are analyzed. The results of meta-analysis show that financing efficiency has a significant positive impact on the entrepreneurial vitality of college students. Entrepreneurial competence, entrepreneurial education and entrepreneurial location environment have significant positive moderating effects on the relationship between financing efficiency and the entrepreneurial vitality of college students, Financing effectiveness and availability have significant positive effects on entrepreneurial intention and entrepreneurial performance. On the basis of these conclusions, this study puts forward relevant suggestions from the perspective of government, universities and entrepreneurs. Full article

Developing science- and innovation-based special towns plays a pivotal role in new urbanization, and enterprise cooperative innovation can help accelerate the development of high-quality science- and innovation-based special towns. A dynamic evolutionary model of enterprise cooperative innovation under two different mechanisms of market law and government regulation is developed for a government-led science and innovation town. The influence of various influencing factors, including willingness to cooperate, on the choice of enterprise cooperative innovation strategy is examined, and MATLAB simulation is used to verify the analysis and provide suggestions for promoting the sustainability of enterprise cooperative innovation. As a result of the study, it is shown that factors influencing the choice of cooperative innovation strategy for enterprises under the market mechanism include the cost and benefits of cooperative innovation, the degree of willingness to cooperate, and the degree of effort. When the market mechanism fails, government subsidies and incentive bonuses are more effective than either alone when it comes to encouraging firms to adopt cooperative innovation strategies. When government penalties are lower than free-rider benefits, they cannot influence firms’ speculative behavior. It is found that only a penalty intensity above the threshold can effectively inhibit the phenomenon of free-riding and motivate enterprises in science- and innovation-oriented characteristic towns to choose a cooperative innovation strategy, and the greater the penalty intensity, the faster the enterprises will tend to cooperate and innovate. Digital business transformation is considered an effective business strategy that appears to have gained attention since the enterprises are challenged to continuously improve their business practices as well as capabilities. The use of digital technologies could reduce the influence of external crises and could introduce massive changes in business operations by providing better business models. Moreover, adopting digital technology can influence both economic sustainability and social value of enterprises and can improve regional socio-economic conditions. There are few recent studies on how technology can empower enterprises at different phases of growth and sustainability; furthermore, very few studies are available that determine how adopting different modern digital technologies can create value for small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Therefore, this study aims to close this gap and investigate the moderating role of entrepreneurial orientation. With the support of resource-based view (RBV) and dynamic capability view (DCV) theories, along with a literature review, a theoretical model has been developed. It was then validated using the PLS-SEM technique considering 319 respondents who are SME employees in India. The findings show that adopting digital technologies has a significant impact on the creation of economic sustainability and social value for SMEs. The study also found a significant moderating impact of entrepreneurial orientation on the relationship between social and economic value creation and SME performance. Full article

In today’s era, digital technology and the digital economy are the forerunners of the scientific and technological revolution and industrial transformation in the world. This paper chooses the organization and executive integration perspectives, studies the effects of relationship between digital resources input and service innovation in China’s finance industry, and the path and the mechanism of the transmission process. Through empirical research, we find that digital resource input has a significant positive impact on service innovation, and information sharing and value creation have significant mediating effects on the relationship between digital resource input and service innovation. Network openness significantly promotes the positive relationship between digital resource input and value creation, while big data technical ability significantly promotes the positive relationship between information sharing and service innovation. Our findings have some significant meanings for China’s financial enterprises. Full article

The recent COVID-19 pandemic has had a huge impact on the global job market, with increasing unemployment rates leading to an unstable social situation that has affected college students’ job prospects. This situation has drawn the attention of the Chinese government and universities to the promotion of entrepreneurship. The present study used field theory to analyze the entrepreneurial intentions of 4926 college students in Hangzhou, an emerging global digital city. It was found that college students who had received entrepreneurship education were more likely to insist on entrepreneurship, while the native environmental field had a significant positive effect on students’ sustainable entrepreneurial intention (SEI). These findings provide a good reference for universities to promote entrepreneurial intentions among college students and provide advice on the construction of entrepreneurship education fields. This paper highlights the growing importance towards supporting Chinese Small to Medium sized Enterprises (SMEs) in adopting pro-active and collaborative behaviors that stimulate sustainability initiatives. Equating to 90% of enterprises in the country and contributing towards 60% of the nation’s gross domestic product (GDP), China’s SMEs are recognized for their willingness to engage in change, raising the potential for exploring and embarking on new ventures. This paper proposes that a design thinking mind-set, rooted in empathic stakeholder dialogue, conceptually supports SMEs to engage with the increasingly complex challenges that envelop China’s society, culture, economy, and environment. Discussion emphasizes that proactively including and responding to the various and ambiguous needs of stakeholders leads to increased opportunity for innovation and new ways of thinking, both being vital for sustainable and responsible growth. Equally, the questions of whom to empathize with and how should SMEs empathize are postulated as roadblocks to the adoption of design thinking in SMEs. This paper proposes a model for addressing those challenges. Full article
