Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Africa and her people are undergoing profound and rapid change, socially, economically, and environmentally, change that is already threatening the long-term conservation of its immense biodiversity and natural heritage. Real concern exists on the continent and worldwide about the cost to the environment of a rising and growing Africa, and of the implications of globalization on the wellbeing of her people and ecosystems. Leveraging on globalization to expand and improve conservation efforts in Africa, while avoiding its negative consequences, is a crucial skill that the conservation community in Africa needs to hone and perfect. Managing these unprecedented socio-economic changes implied by globalization, while maintaining biodiversity and ecosystem services, requires a unified commitment by the African scientific and practitioner community to generate the research and experiences needed to identify appropriate policies and practices for successful long-term conservation.

The Third African Congress for Conservation Biology (ACCB 2016), organized jointly by the Africa Section of the Society for Conservation Biology and the Faculty of Science of the University of Chouaïb Doukkali, will take place between 4 and 8 September 2016, in El Jadida, Morocco (www.accb2016morocco.com). ACCB 2016 is aimed at exploring the multiple facets of globalization in the context of conservation in Africa. More than 400 conservation biology researchers and practitioners, students, professionals and visionaries in this field will gather under one tent to share their latest experiences, learn from and be inspired by one another, and develop new collaborations aimed at strengthening the field in Africa.

Authors of oral and poster presentations at the conference are cordially invited to contribute original research papers or reviews to this Special Issue of Diversity. Three manuscripts will be selected to receive the Exceptional Paper on Africa Conservation Biology Award, which consists of a complete fee waiver for an open access publication in this journal.

We look forward to receiving your submissions and meeting you in El Jadida.
