Cover Story: The work evaluates the biomethane production increase after pretreatment of three lignocellulosic wastes (wheat straw (WS), barley straw (BS), and grape stem (GS)) with 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate ([Emim][Ac]) ionic liquid. Crystallinity index, measured by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and lignocellulosic composition determined by TGA, before and after pretreatment were related to the methane yield of the solid fraction. Moreover, the methane potential of the liquid fraction was theoretically calculated in function of reducing fermentable sugar concentration. Methane production of solid plus liquid fraction obtained after [Emim][Ac] pre-treatment increased 1.61- and 1.34-fold compared with raw wheat straw and grape stem, respectively. View this paper
