Cover Story: Out of the five senses that a human can perceive, sight offers a complete perception of the environment, and thus is considered one of the most important ones. Computer vision studies the sense of sight in order to apply it to machines. To put it in simple terms, computer vision can be considered the discipline of "teaching machines how to see" the world behind the images. Environment perception and environment understanding represent the core tasks of computer vision. In recent years, due to the rapid development of deep learning techniques and dedicated hardware, the vision-based solutions that support these tasks have obtained outstanding results. However, more complex solutions for environment perception and environment understanding, such as semantic instance segmentation, remain an open challenge in the computer vision field.
