Cover Story: Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are frequently incorporated into hydrogels to obtain materials with excellent antibacterial properties with applications in wound healing or periodontitis treatment. The addition of pre-formed AgNPs to hydrogels allows for accurate control of silver content and uniform particle distribution. PVA–chitosan composite hydrogels with embedded AgNPs were prepared via double-cross-linking procedures: freeze thawing and electrostatic interactions induced by oxalic acid (OA). OA was used both for the solubilization of chitosan and for creating cross-links through electrostatic interactions and hydrogen bonds. Chitosan-stabilizing AgNPs contributed to the fixation and retention of the nanoparticles in the hydrogel due to having the same physical interactions with OA. View this paper
