Alcohol Consumption and Associated Cardiovascular Risk Factors

Dear Colleagues,

Habitual alcohol drinking shows diverse effects on individual health, depending on the amount of alcohol consumed. The incidence of cardiovascular disease, especially ischemic heart disease, is known to be lower in light-to-moderate drinkers than in nondrinkers, whereas excessive drinking impairs cardiovascular health. Early detection and correction of cardiovascular risk factors are crucial for the prevention of cardiovascular disease. While age, gender, ethnicity, and genetic predisposition are uncontrollable cardiovascular risk factors, smoking, obesity, hypertension, dyslipidemia, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome are representative of correctable cardiovascular risk factors. These risk factors accelerate the progression of atherosclerosis, which is the basic pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease.

In this Special Issue of IJERPH, up-to-date knowledge on the relationships between alcohol drinking and various cardiovascular risk factors is introduced, and how we should manage the habit of alcohol drinking will be discussed. Recent topics on cardiovascular risk, e.g., COVID-19, are also included in the scope of this Special Issue. Articles focusing not only on epidemiological studies but also on experimental studies are welcome in this Special Issue. We hope that this Special Issue will contribute to the development of future strategies for the promotion of cardiovascular health and the prevention of cardiovascular aging and dysfunction through establishing the associations between alcohol drinking and cardiovascular risk factors.
