Cover Story: Tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) is a thrips-transmitted virus that causes substantial economic loss to many crops. To understand TSWV epidemiology in processing tomato fields, thrips population densities and TSWV incidences were monitored in transplant greenhouses and hundreds of fields in California’s Central Valley. Transplants were not a source of TSWV, whereas thrips and TSWV inoculum sources included winter bridge crops and weeds and varied in importance depending on the production region. The results were used to model TSWV epidemiology and to develop an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy for TSWV. Our IPM program focuses on strategic field placement, planting TSWV-free transplants, planting resistant varieties, monitoring for thrips and targeting early generations for management, roguing infected plants, sanitation, and strategic cropping to avoid overlapping with bridge crops.
