2023 September-2 - 137 articles

Cover Story: The second victim phenomenon (SVP) in healthcare professionals is insufficiently studied in German-speaking regions. A study in Austria with 414 pediatricians uncovered a concerning trend: a staggering 89% of them identify as second victims. The primary triggers are patient death or suicide. Notably, higher neuroticism and extraversion, combined with outpatient roles, lead to more pronounced symptoms. There is an urgent call for action. Comprehensive intervention programs, particularly those grounded in peer support, are essential. They can address the risk of healthcare workers silently suffering and dysfunctionally coping with the SVP. Moreover, such initiatives can enhance psychological safety, ultimately reducing patient safety adverse events. View this paper
