Gels, Volume 10, Issue 11

2024 November - 80 articles

Cover Story: Swelling and compression tests were performed on gelatin–alginate-based scaffolds. The evolution of the hydrogels’ components and their densities were measured, and the molar properties of the interstitial fluid were determined. Hyperelastic parameter identification based on constitutive models of the rubber elasticity theory was performed, yielding a macromolecular description of the strain energy density function. The obtained network structural parameters were employed in the equilibrium swelling equation to determine the polymer–solvent interaction parameter. The results show that the average mesh size defines the friction coefficient and can be regarded as a concentration-dependent characteristic length that connects non-linear elasticity with inherent visco-elasticity through hysteresis, which quantifies the total dissipated energy.
