2024 April - 17 articles

Cover Story: After the synthesis of mauveine in 1856, synthetic colourants started being invented, produced, traded and applied globally and very rapidly. These materials have been used in textiles, furniture, prints, paintings, drawings, etc. An introduction to the history of early synthetic dyes (ESDs) and synthetic organic pigments (SOPs) is included in this review. The characterisation of ESDs and SOPs is a challenging task, due to the high number of formulations, the need for specific reference materials and databases, and the complex degradation pathways. Analytical techniques and strategies are reviewed, including non-invasive spectroscopic approaches and micro-invasive molecular analysis by mass spectrometric techniques, providing an overview of the study of these molecules and formulations in the cultural heritage field. View this paper
