Cover Story: Data-driven methods for the analysis of complex dynamical systems have gained significant attention over the last few years. The goal is to extract global information about the system’s behavior by analyzing time-series data, which can stem from either simulations or measurements. Meanwhile, kernel methods have become a valuable tool in the field of machine learning, as they make it possible to implicitly use large feature spaces, while the resulting numerical problems are easily set up. In this study, we exploit the derivative reproducing property of sufficiently smooth kernel functions to derive kernel approximations to certain differential operators, including the Koopman generator and Schrödinger operator. We illustrate their capabilities by analyzing stochastic differential equations, basic quantum mechanics problems, and examples of manifold learning. View this paper
