Cover Story: Childhood obesity is a substantial health concern in the United States and worldwide. Obesity is associated with higher metabolic and cardiovascular disorders. Early detection of obesity-related biomarkers in children is vital to reducing adulthood health complications. Bead-based multiplex immunoassay is a high-throughput method for analyzing multiple-target systems in one sample. In this study, we performed non-invasive measurement of neurotrophins, brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), and β-nerve growth factor (β-NGF). We identified increased expression of BDNF, β-NGF, and blood pressure in obese compared to healthy children. Both neurotrophins are positively associated with anthropometric measurements and blood pressure. This suggests that salivary neurotrophins can serve as non-invasive obesity biomarkers in children.
