Cover Story: Nursing work environments change constantly and grow in complexity. Previous literature explored nursing work environments evaluating predominantly structure and outcome aspects rather than work processes. With the intention to expand present knowledge regarding nursing workload, this research explored nurses’ work processes to identify antecedents of nurses’ work organization and observe the effects on physical, mental, and emotional dimensions of nursing workload. This is a cross-sectional study. Nurses working in nine medical-surgical wards across three hospitals in Italy self-reported on work organization and workloads connected to specific shifts. Patient, nurse, and workflow aspects influence nurses’ work organization, which in turn affects all dimensions of workload. Some recommendations for improvement are suggested. View this paper
