2024 August - 61 articles

Cover Story: The following study demonstrates how encapsulating enzyme-immobilized silica particles (Si-Enzymes: 40–50 μm) within hollow-type spherical bacterial cellulose (HSBC) gels enables the use of the interior of HSBC gels as a reaction field. The pore size of the cellulose nanofiber network of the BC gelatinous membrane was determined to be less than 1 μm. This small pore size allows the substrate to permeate into the HSBC gel and continuously react with the encapsulated Si-Enzymes. Moreover, the encapsulated Si-Enzymes did not leak from the internal cavity of the HSBC gel. The encapsulation technique presented in the following study is expected to facilitate the delivery of enzymes and catalysts that are not originally present in the in vivo environment.
