Cover Story: The International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) is widely used to encode patient diagnostic information in Electronic Health Records (EHR). Encoding pathologies into ICD-10 codes is a laborious task, usually performed by dedicated physicians with specific training. On the other hand, automatically classifying EHR from text has been challenging to the NLP community due to the specificities of the clinical text and dimension of the ICD ontology. The best previously proposed model was the PLM-ICD deep neural network. In this study, an improved method based on the cosine similarity, composed of a novel technique of multiple runs and a bucket category strategy, called PLM-ICD-C, is proposed as an aid to the PLM-ICD model. The results show an improvement in the number of probably useful suggestions for ICD-10 codes. View this paper
