Cover Story: Digital transformation efforts, as part of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, promise to revolutionize engineering practices. However, given the multitude of technological choices and the diversity of potential investment decisions, many engineering entities are slow and haphazard in their adoption of digital innovations and fail to meet the expectations set for digital engineering and digital transformation. This study looks at the problem from a novel perspective, reviewing decades of research on the adoption of digital technology to distill strategic adoption factors that have the potential to influence frameworks around implementation and accelerate both digital engineering and digital transformation efforts.
